I think SGU started with a concept rather than a story. Someone pitched the idea, “Hey, lets make a Stargate series which combines the elements of BSG and Lost.” The elements alone were not what made people watch those two series, the creators had a story they intended to tell from the beginning. 10 to 15 years ago it was enough just to say “Hey, we’ve got sci-fi, drool over our awesomeness!” Now, unless a decent story arc is established in the first few eps the show will start bleeding viewers.
