Beating a dead horse or reinvigorating content?

I must admit to some excitement over the concept of a Stargate MMO as I loved the ideas presented in the movie; that is, of course, assuming they pull it off. I was much less impressed with SG1, the TV series. The past two MMO games I’ve been interested in, Uru and Starwars: Galaxies, have been destroyed before they were released by emphasizing the wrong aspects of the experience. Having just been announced it is impossible to say how this will unfold, but I will keep tabs on its development.

State of the Union tonight

For people who don’t know us here at the Zig, you should know our normal conversations often lead to things that can not be un-heard, un-thought, or un-pictured. This is usually followed by one person’s cry of pain, and another persons satisfied chuckle.

Well now there’s a product to help the poor unprepared minds who happen to speak to us.

Blizzard of GLBT gaming policy questions

Sara Andrews thought it was a big misunderstanding when she received an e-mail from a game master in Blizzard Entertainment’s popular online role playing game “World of Warcraft” citing her for “Harassment - Sexual Orientation.”

Andrews had posted that she was recruiting for a “GLBT friendly” guild in a general chat channel within the game.

Believing that her notice had been accidentally flagged, she e-mailed Blizzard to correct the problem. Blizzard, to Andrews’ surprise, upheld the decision.

Idiots. Go read the whole thing. It almost souds like a joke, if it was any other industry.

Just suck it up…

My wife had a near miss with type 2 diabetes recently. Turns out it was nothing, thank God, but waiting the two days for results gave us a lot of time to think about the implications, and how it would impact our lives. One of the things that I kept thinking about was the ever present insulin shots. Statistically, every American probably knows someone with diabetes, so I shouldn’t have to tell you what it’s like watching a friend stick, measure, and inject before meals.

Well, maybe the third part is going to change. It might seem like a small thing, but this could really do a lot to improve the quality of life for a lot of people.

They should all be done this way

I can’t comment on how accurate this review is, but I’m pretty sure this is the future of movie reviews.

(found via OC, who also have a good review. Watched the movie with 6 beers in ‘em)

Shiny!

Filed under: — The Hierophant @ 4:54 pm

Behold the the hi-res Ultraviolet trailer.

Bear in mind that this is from Kurt Wimmer, the producer of Equilibrium. Based on that film, I think we all know what to expect: Not a single ounce of original story content, but DAMN SHINY action scenes. Yum.

For those of you who missed the memo, Ultraviolet is current the front-runner for the 2006 award for Best Movie Starring Milla Jovovich As A Super-Powered Gun-Fu Vampire.

E-mail from my mother:

Today at lunch time a pickup truck came down the driveway with a chest freezer strapped in the back. A guy got out of the truck and was coming up the walk to the door. I was thinking that they had the wrong house for a delivery or something and either wanted directions or something like that. But no, when I answered the door, the young man told me that they had frozen steaks for sale — you know “like Schwans” and wanted to know if I was interested in buying any. I was momentarily dumbfounded at the absurdity of what he was saying. I mean this was a young guy with a pickup truck with a chest freezer full of steaks in my driveway!! I almost wanted to look in the freezer but thought better of it and told him that sorry no, we were vegetarians so wouldn’t be interested in any steaks. The young man apoligized for taking up my time, I told him “no problem” and he left. It was all I could do not to bust out laughing at the door. It was so damn funny it was like something on TV.

National Pie Day - January 23rd

Created by the American Pie Council, National Pie Day is dedicated to the celebration of pie. As part of our American heritage, this day is a perfect opportunity to pass on the love and enjoyment of pie eating and pie making to future generations.

Each year about this time the American Pie Council sponsors the National Pie Championships where some of the best pie makers in the United States and Canada enter their pies to compete for the “American Pie Council’s Best Pie in America” award. For more information on who has the best pies in America, click on “National Pie
Championships” icon.

Mmmm, that’s like, I don’t know, 22/7ths awsome.

You Guys Need to See This

“Guys” in the generic and non-gender specific meaning, of course.

Remember that crazy commercial from the Firefly Movie which preceeded a rather interesting fight sequence? Well someone has found it random and hilarious enough to segment out of the DVD and post it for selective addictive viewing.

Schadenfreude Study

Evidence shows that men expect punishment to be served and some even enjoy it while women still sympathize with the culprit.

It was an interesting approach to test how people responded to cheaters being punished for thier wrong doing. Turns out women felt empathy regardless of the guilt of the subject while men empathized with the innocent but wanted justice to be served on the guilty, especially if that meant physical punishment.

Pleix Films

Just a note here that bears mentioning - I linked to Pleix Film’s short film “Birds” in my last post (RAVER DOGS) but I checked out the main site and a lot of their videos are strange, weird, and wonderfully put together. I highly recommend checking them out.

Netlag is a good one to start with.

Security, Microsoft, and Raver Dogs

So, while reading Slashdot (no link, if you can’t get there you shouldn’t be reading this blog) today at work, I came across a comment that told us about the Six Dumbest Ideas in Computer Security. I had a look, and I think they’re all really pretty bright ideas… it’s kind of a shame nobody implements them.

And, to make up for such a useful post, I give you Raver Dogs, found via the ever-present Weaselking.
