Increase your indie length in just seven days

Filed under: — The Fool @ 4:57 pm

Here’s a Flaming Lips music video (Quicktime) that I think is for a song on their new soon-to-be-released album. Unfortunately it’s taking like seven days for me to load the file.

EDIT: That page seemed to have some issues (may be dead). I am your lord and savior though, for I have found another, much shitter, but faster loading copy (Windows Media).

Boom.

Yes, there seems to be a database issue. Host has been contacted.

Edit: Problem solved, no host issue. Just one of the database tables that got a little wonky, easily repaired.

There are some people who think the sun revolves around the Earth. Furthermore, they think the Bible says this (the passage they quote seems to me like it’s referring to a very long day, when the sun seems to stand still, as can be perceived sometimes on a very hot day).

You know the saddest part? I don’t have enough faith in human intelligence to think this is actually meant to be a joke.

ZoD Forum: Torture

Filed under: — The Fool @ 12:07 pm

Okay, maybe it’s just my desire to kill all humans going here, but I’m having a hard time figuring out why I should be opposed to torture.

Let’s be a little more specific. I’m talking about torture of captured military and/or intelligence agents, not civilians of any national allegience.

So, somebody explain it to me. What’s wrong with torture?

Oops.

Don’t mess with [the liquor control board in] Texas!

So apparently, in Texas, it’s now a crime just to be drunk. Even if you’re not planning on driving!

Oklahoma’s not OK with CentOS

The other story I must share with you tonight details the chronic stupidity of a city official in Tuttle, Oklahoma. Apparently not understanding what the standard “You didn’t set up your Apache install right, n00b” CentOS page was for, he contacted their tech support. Which is fine. And, when they wouldn’t “remove their software” from his website, he threatened to call the FBI. Which is not fine. Things went downhill from there.

So, you may have noticed that The Register covered this, via the first link. Turns out the official, whose email was listed in the CentOS page I also linked to, was deluged in email about how idiotic he was. He contacted The Register about it, and asked them to stop.

Edit: his email’s since been removed from the CentOS page. Pity, really. I’m sure it’s floating around on the net somewhere, not that he’d know that…

Hilarious reading. The quote that really gets me is that he really thought he’d been hacked when “the same content showed up on four different computers at the city office.” Someone sit this man down and explain how the internets work to him.

Developers 1, Pirates 0

So, old news, but good news. A software dev in Russia was walking through a market when he saw a pirated copy of his program for sale. Being a nice upstanding citizen, he punched the pirate in the face.

When the cops broke them up they took the fight to a boxing ring where the dev proceeded to trounce the pirate.

Just remember kids, crime never pays, and sometimes it gets you punched in the face by a scrawny geek. The *AA are still assholes, though.

Jack Chick-related hilarity

Filed under: — The Hierophant @ 11:09 am

Really, is there any better phrase with which to start the day?

Over at Rockstars’ Ramblins, the Bronze Dog has posted a great Chick parody, based on the infamously hilarious “Dark Dungeons” tract. Since Chick is notoriously cease-and-desist happy, these images have been preserved here below the cut. Permission has been granted by the author to repost and reproduce freely, as long as they’re properly credited.

Ow, my poor goddamned brain.

Filed under: — The Hierophant @ 4:29 pm

Some people, when I start ranting about the cr/evo debate, ask me, “Don’t worry, your Hierophant-ness. The situation isn’t that desperate.”

An example of just how bad it is can be found in crap like this:

The theory of evolution does not and cannot explain so much about the universe that we know. For instance, when and how did water evolve? How does it happen that gravity can hold us to the Earth, and at the same time allow us to step up without any trouble? How did it happen that the Earth is spinning at the exact rate that keeps us from feeling that movement?

This is a perfect example of what we might call Bad Waiter Syndrome. If you have a bad waiter, and he makes a small mistake, such as bringing the wrong kind of salad dressing, that’s easy to fix - you say “Yo, waiter-dude. Wrong salad dressing.”

However, if instead of bringing you a salad, he stuffs a rabid wolverine down your trousers and starts singing showtunes, it’s just overload time. There so much wrong here, you don’t even know where to start. This is what we’re up against.

Nintendo Keeps On Rockin’

We love you Nintendo. Don’t ever leave us.

So, lots of us here at the Ziggurat are tabletop RPG gamers, or at least collect RPGs we’d like to play if we ever got the chance and could convince other people to join up.

A favorite is Exalted, for it’s over-the-type top anime/wuxia stylings and reasonably neat and interestingly fiddly systems.

Exalted 2nd Edition came out recently.

Over on RPG.net, where Exalted has been since release something of a darling, forum regular Kasumi has put together this incredibly entertaining and illustrative example of Exalted 2E combat.

It’s pretty sweet. Go, read, buy Exalted.

Aaaaaah! *splat*

So, the guy at Questionable Content (an excellent webcomic), said something about his friend having a charity, Operation Freefall, and that it was for a good cause. Feeling random this morning, I clicked on it, mostly because I thought “operation freefall” sounded like a good name for a band.

Turns out the point of this charity is an anti-sexual-assault event, and to make their point they’re going to go skydiving. I guess charities are allowed to do whatever they want to promote their cause, but somehow “jump out of a plane for rape” never really occurred to me before. It could all be some plot by neoconservatives, get liberals to jump out of planes and then replace their parachutes with leaflets promoting guns or something. Maybe we should start a new charity, Saftey Check Parachutes for Doom. That just sounds bad…

MOD EDIT: fixed your link

Okay, so, the Cato Institute is a well known extreme-right sanctuary. So, when they publish a report saying that The DMCA is a Bad Thing it’s enough to make people stand up and take notice. Hopefully businesses, but not likely.

Still, it’s yet another indicator that the movement against this stuff is growing.

Edit: The Heiro has informed me that the Cato is not exactly extreme right. Apparently they were drifting toward neocon for a while, but are in general right with libertarian leanings. My bad.

I’m Famous!

So, there’s an article on the all-seeing eye of the internet, Slashdot, about people and their online presences. The article is all about a person who got in trouble for what happened when their real name got Googled, but one of the comments suggested that people should also google their aliases. I already know what comes up when I google my real name, so I googled for Rhadamanthos.

The number one result on google for Rhadamanthos is my very own profile page on ZoD. Considering all the legitimate uses of the name Rhadamanthos, I think I win at the Internets.

Edit: Two of our compatriots, ChibiDan and Lynnevere, both have their ZoD profiles come in second in Google. Cheebs gets whupped by some kid’s DeviantArt site, too.

Coincidence, or not?

Well, it looks like there’s a new development in the GeekPunk book Hero Happy Hour story. This is currently on the front page of the GeekPunk webpage:

GeekPunk, the independent comic book publishers of the critically acclaimed and fan favorite superhero comedy comic book Hero Happy Hour, regrets to announce that the title is now on a temporary hiatus for an undetermined amount of time.

Snip

Unfortunately, due to life circumstances involving family and a real money job, I am unable to continue as HHH’s regular artist. It’s not fair to you as fans or Dan as my collaborator to say that I am going to try and do a bi-monthly or even a quarterly book when I know that I am unable.

This announcement was dated Feb 23 on the GeekPunk website, their announcment to change the name to Hero Happy Hour was dated Jan 30. There’s nothing in their release to indicate the name change was the reason the book is on hiatus, but the timeline does make it possible.

Full text below the cut, because it’ll probably go away at some point. Based on their scheme for news URLs, it may show up here at some point.
