Have too much money?

Filed under: — The Fool @ 5:08 pm

Okay. Wrong question.

Holidays are a good excuse to donate to charities and causes, which help us affluent white folk feel like we’re zomgactivists while sipping overpriced lattes and complaining about politics / poor service / lousy sex / etc. The internet makes this easy (both the donating and the complaining) and provides a plethora of wells in which to vomit disposable income. I think of it as part of the new years hangover recovery process.

Absent other ideas, it’s hard to feel bad about supporting wikipedia / wikimedia foundation, IMO.

This is about as preachy / disgustingly self-righteous as I get for the year (not counting spaces v. tabs debates … I wonder if there’s some way I can donate toward making everyone use tabs for indentation), so feel free to condemn / ignore.

While the actual donations will be a bit late for the holidays, since the judging hasn’t gone through yet, the Touhou forum I hang out on took donations for charity with the charities it goes to being selected by the winners of a Christmas song rewrite contest. I was genuinely floored by how much we all raised.

I like to donate to Samaritan’s Purse, which is a Christian organization that goes to the poor parts of the world and has multiple service projects that help people do things like have clean water or raise their own food. This year I donated to the project that saves children from bondage and abuse.

I’m a big fan of Child’s Play, as charities go. The Penny Arcade guys are doing good things there, and they raise a staggering amount of money to help sick kids find a little joy in their days in the hospital.

I’ve been donating to Child’s Play every year since it started. It’s kind of fun to shop for toys, even if they aren’t going to me. And while Wikipedia is insanely useful on an everyday basis, it’s hard to trump sick kids.
